Avocado Mattress Review- Green, But is it Comfortable?
There are only a few other brands out there that take your sleep as seriously as Avocado does. In this review, we’ll be looking at one of its iconic mattresses that target environmentally-conscious folks: the Avocado Green Mattress.
This is a 13-inch eco-friendly hybrid bed with organic cotton cover, natural Dunlop latex, and individually pocketed coils from recycled steel.
Owing to the pillow-top padding, this mattress has a medium-firm feeling of around 6.5 on 1-10 firmness scale. There is also an option to get it without the pillow-top, in which case, the mattress feels a little bit firmer (7/10).
Wondering why most folks can’t recommend this mattress enough?
In this Avocado mattress review, we’ll examine how its hybrid construction performs on various fronts, including support and comfort, temperature regulation, motion isolation, and edge support, among other vital considerations.
Meet the Avocado Mattress Brand

Avocado is an American company that started in 2015 with one goal in mind- developing non-toxic mattresses from sustainable materials. This brand currently has two beds under its name: the Avocado Green mattress that we’ll review here, and the Avocado Vegan.
The Vegan is identical to the Green mattress. The only significant difference is that it replaces the wool comfort system of the Green mattress with organic cotton.
This manufacturer also recycles the springs that it uses for the support system of these mattresses. So, as you can see, the Avocado is a mattress that interests most eco-conscious people who want a bed that doesn’t have all those questionable chemicals in poly foam and memory foam mattresses.
Let’s face it, though: investing in an organic and eco-friendly mattress means a lot both to you and Mother Nature. However, it won’t make much sense if it doesn’t meet the sleeper’s comfort and support needs. Does the Avocado Green mattress meet these requirements?
Who do we recommend the Avocado mattress for?
- Average-weight stomach, back, and stomach sleepers weighing less than 230 lbs– with the optional pillow top, this mattress becomes a perfect match for those who would otherwise find it uncomfortably firm.
- Those with extreme body weights (above 230 lbs) – this mattress has a strategically-zoned support section that accommodates heavyweight sleepers across all sleeping positions.
- Individuals who sleep hot- this mattress’s combination of a coil system, organic cotton wool, and latex comfort system is a recipe for a bed that sleeps much cooler than all-foam mattresses.
- Environmentally-conscious folks– this mattress will interest you if you find it disquieting to spend a third of your life on a bed full of toxic chemicals.

Avocado Mattress Construction- Know why it’s different
100% Organic Cotton

This mattress’s organic profile starts right from the cover. This cover consists of 100% cotton cover with GOTS certification. GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard) is one of the strictest production certifications that ensures that manufacturers don’t use chemicals, dyes, and toxic bleaches on the fabric. This could explain why this cover is wonderfully soft and smells so natural.
As you probably know about cotton, this cover is amazingly breathable and absorbent. These two attributes make this cover perfect for people who wake up hot and sticky.
Our review team also appreciates that this manufacturer uses wool yarn rosettes to button-tuft all the layers of this bed. This is a much better alternative to using adhesives, which would only add chemicals to your bed.
Comfort system
GOTS-organic and OEKO-TEX 100 Wool

Right beneath the cover of the Avocado Green mattress, you’ll find GOTS organic and OEKO-TEX certified wool. OEKO-TEX is another stringent certification that guarantees you that this wool does not contain chlorinated phenols, pesticides, allergenic dyes, and formaldehyde, among other chemicals.
Wool is naturally fire-resistant and breathable. It also boasts unbeatable thermoregulation properties and, therefore, sleeps cool in the summer, and keeps you warm during winter.
Tip: if you’d prefer a 100% vegan mattress, we’d recommend going with the Avocado Vegan. This variation replaces this wool segment with a layer of 100% organic cotton, which is exceptionally breathable too.
Pillow Top
After the layer of wool, there’s a padding that’s sewn at the top of the mattress. This is the pillow top that we’re talking about. It consists of 2 inches of GOLS organic certified Dunlop latex on top of another 2 inches of Dunlop latex that is standard in all Avocado hybrid mattresses.
The pillow top latex layer has an ILD (Indentation Load Deflection) of 14-19. That’s to say that it’s notably softer than the subsequent layer, which has an ILD of 20-25.
Now, there are two types of latex; Talalay and Dunlop latex. While both of these come from natural sources, Dunlop is much more energy-efficient and durable too. Again, this type of latex tends to work better for pretty much everyone, thanks to its springiness.

Transition layer
The transition layer of this mattress is another 1 inch of Dunlop latex that sits right on top of the support system. This layer has a medium-firm feel as its ILD of 26-31 depicts.
Support layer
The core of this mattress is a system of individually pocketed 8-inch springs made from recycled steel by the legendary Leggett and Platt Company. Depending on the size of the mattress, the number of coils ranges from 756 for the twin bed to 1414 coils for the California King Size mattress.
Overall, mattresses from this manufacturer have close to 50% more coils than the minimum required number. Going through most Avocado mattress reviews, current users report that this bed has higher levels of support and comfort compared to its competitors.
What’s so interesting, though, is that this mattress uses coils with three different gauges to create five distinct firmness zones. Avocado explains that this zoning helps in offering more support and pressure relief to the areas where the body needs it most, including the shoulders and the lower back.
What is the height of the Avocado mattress?
With the pillow top padding, this mattress has a height of 13 inches. However, if you opt to get it without the pillow top, it will be 2 inches shorter at 11 inches.

How firm does this mattress feel?
Firmness in mattresses is more often than not subjective. It depends on an individual’s weight, sleeping position, and personal preferences.
However, from our expert opinion and reviews from current users, the firmness of the Avocado mattress with pillow top is around 6.5. This is the industry standard rating for medium-firm beds. Without the pillow top, this mattress is notably firmer and gets a 7 on the firmness scale.
Latex has an exceptional springiness and minimal contouring that helps in mitigating the firm feel of the coil system. This explains why the Avocado mattress with pillow-top feels plushy.
Performance Ratings- Avocado Mattress in Action
In this section, we aim at breaking down this Avocado mattress review to its specific characteristics. We believe this will help you get a much clearer picture of how it feels like to sleep on this mattress.
Performance Rating Score Table
This table shows our quantified perception on how the Avocado mattress performs on all the characteristics above. Worth mentioning, this data is from our research, feedback from the current users of this mattress, and suggestions from experts.
Performance | Our rating (out of 5) |
---|---|
Temperature Regulation | 4.9 |
Motion isolation | 4.2 |
Noise | 4.3 |
Edge support | 4.9 |
Sex | 4.7 |
Pressure relief | 4.1 |
Off-gassing | 4.6 |
Durability | 4.8 |
Temperature Regulation
From the reviews that we’ve analyzed so far, temperature management seems to be one of the key strengths of this mattress- and it’s not hard to see why. First, Dunlop latex foam has minimal conformity. This means that unlike memory foam, this material won’t envelop you to cause the feeling of sleeping in the mattress.
Although enveloping is a good thing, especially in relieving pressure, it is the main reason why memory foam beds sleep hot.
Secondly, latex naturally sleeps cooler thanks to its open-cell structure. This layer also has pinholes that further boosts aeration.
This mattress also gets a good boost in terms of temperature management from its breathable layer of cotton and coil base.
Motion isolation
The Avocado Green mattress has notable motion transfer. This is due to the bounciness that emanates from the coil support system. However, we have to acknowledge that this mattress performs much better than what we’ve come to expect of most hybrid mattresses. All credit here goes to its thick latex layer and encased coils.

Noise
Whenever we talk about coil-based mattresses, we tend to think about a bed that squeaks with the slightest movement. Expect to get surprised with this mattress, though. Although there some audible clunking and creaking, especially in dead-silent rooms, the dense latex layers and individually pocketed coils help a lot in making this mattress effective even for light sleepers.
Edge support
Innerspring hybrid mattresses have the best edge support if you compare them with all-foam beds. The Avocado mattress takes this versatility a notch higher by employing a dedicated reinforced steel perimeter. Its dense latex foam also comes in handy in reducing sink and sag along the edges.
This excellent edge support creates structure and increases the usable sleeping surface. This allows couples to utilize all the surface even on a small mattress since there’s no fear of rolling out at night.
Secondly, this firm edge support allows you to sit on the bed when folding laundry, putting on shoes or doing stretches.

Sex
This bed has most of the characteristics that people look for when buying the best mattress for sex. The bouncy base, for instance, helps in creating and maintaining rhythm during upward movements and downward thrusts.
Moreover, the dense Dunlop mattress makes it easy for the couple to change positions without sinking uncomfortably into the bed. The strong edge support is a great addition too for sex partners who like getting a little bit wild.
However, as we mentioned before, the coil system has some notable squeaking, which may be audible across the other room if you have thin walls.
Pressure relief
The innerspring support system and dense latex combination of this mattress mean that it doesn’t have the contour and sinking feeling that enhances pressure relief. This is especially the case with average and lightweight folks who sleep strictly on their side.
However, for heavyweight stomach and back sleepers, the construction of this mattress gives it an even floating feeling. The result is incredible support on the parts that are hard to accommodate, namely the upper and lower back.

Off-gassing
When you remove the Avocado mattress from the box, you may or may not experience any ‘new mattress smell.’ Since this mattress is made mainly of organic materials, it’s not surprising to get your bed with a fresh smell out of the box.
However, this mattress may also have a faint smell from the latex layers. However, this is almost negligible compared to most memory foam hybrid mattresses. Most reviewers report that it fades away in 5-8 hours.
Durability
On average, innerspring and latex beds tend to be more durable than poly foam and memory foam mattresses. When you combine these two, you get a very responsive mattress that will take long before sinking under your body.
Although the mattress will eventually form indentations (all beds do), we expect this to happen much later in life thanks to the cotton layer on the top. Otherwise, Avocado offers a 25-year warranty offer with this mattress.
Avocado Mattress vs. Your Weight and Sleeping Position
Sleep Position Ratings (1-5)
Position/Weight | Lightweight Less than 130 lbs | Average weight 130 to 230 lbs | Heavyweight Above 230 lbs |
---|---|---|---|
Side | 3.8 | 4.4 | 4.8 |
Back | 4.3 | 4.7 | 4.9 |
Stomach | 4.2 | 4.8 | 4.9 |
Lightweight sleepers- less than 130 lbs
The manufacturer claims that the Avocado with pillow top has a luxury plush comfort feel. In our opinion, though, if you are a lightweight sleeper and you sleep strictly on your side, this bed is going to be firmer for you. This mattress might also cause pressure points on your shoulder and around the waist. On the other hand, it might interest lightweight stomach and back snoozers who prefer sleeping on a firm bed.
Average-weight sleepers- 130-230 lbs
The pillow top design of this mattress gives it a medium-firm feel that tends to work well with most average-weight sleepers across all sleeping positions. People who sleep on their back and stomach tend to enjoy it the most thanks to its ample support that keeps the spine in proper alignment.
What about heavyweight sleepers above 230 lbs?
Folks from this weight group prefer a firm and responsive mattress with lots of support. This mattress offers all of these, no wonder it’s so popular with this group.
With or without the pillow top, most heavyweight individuals report that the Avocado mattress offers enough support, and it’s comfortable in all sleeping positions.
The reason for this is that latex is incredibly responsive. It gets even better, especially when on top of a zoned innerspring base. This means that the sleeper enjoys constant support even when turning or changing positions.

Avocado Mattress Warranty Analysis
This mattress comes with a limited warranty of 25 years, which is 5-7 times longer than what we come across with most inexpensive hybrid mattresses. This warranty only covers the original purchaser, and it’s not transferable. Refund and Return Policy
Since June 2019, Avocado has been offering this mattress with an unbelievable 365-night trial period up from 100 nights. In our experience with mattresses, brands that offer warranties this long often put a lot of effort into not only the durability of the bed but its comfort levels too.
All in all, you’ll tell whether this is the best mattress for your sleep needs in around two months. Should you want to send it back, Avocado assures that there won’t be any shipping or restocking fee. However, the mattress needs to be in a condition worthy of donating. Regular Complaints about Avocado Mattress that we’ve come across
- Smell and off-gassing – If you are super-sensitive to odors, you might detect a smell from this mattress after removing it from the box. This is the natural scent of rubber tree sap, and it’s neither unpleasant nor overpowering as it would be the case with memory foam. It disappears in a few hours or a day.
- Mattress overly firm – Without the pillow top, you may find this mattress quite firm, especially if you are a lightweight side sleeper. If you fall in the 130-230-pound weight group, we’d recommend it if you sleep on your back, stomach, or both. We also encourage getting it with the pillow top to mitigate the firm feeling of the base layer.
Our Verdict
The Avocado Green has solid value for people who care about what goes into their mattress. We are particularly impressed by the efforts that this manufacturer puts into ensuring that this bed is 100% toxic . Also, by combining Dunlop latex and a zoned innerspring system with pocketed coils, we believe that this mattress offers just the right mix of comfort and even support for its target group.
The Avocado mattress works best for average- to heavyweight sleepers, especially those who sleep on their back and stomach or a combination of these positions.
