Casper Review Outline

Casper says that it’s out to reimagine the way we sleep, rest, and dream. Judging from Casper mattress reviews from previous buyers, this manufacturer seems to do just that.

The original Casper is a mixed-foam mattress with four layers that give it a total height of 12 inches and a medium firmness level of 5 out of 10. It employs a proprietary foam with open-cell construction design at the top, followed by high-density memory foam. For the transition layer, this bed has what Casper calls Zoned Support. The last layer is a 7-inch dense foam responsible for the overall durability and support of the mattress.

In this Casper mattress review, we’ll be giving you our opinion of what this construction and foam arrangement mean to you as the sleeper. We’ll also evaluate this mattress’s performance in terms of temperature regulation, pressure relief, and motion isolation according to our research and feedback from current users and other mattress experts.

Meet the Casper Mattress Brand

It’s hard to talk about the best bed-in-a-box brands in the world without mentioning Casper. This manufacturer is ubiquitous with this concept since it was the first manufacturer to mass-produce these mattresses.

Casper launched its operations in 2013. It has its headquarters in New York City, and it designs and assembles its mattresses right here in the USA.

The original Casper mattress was the first mattress from this manufacturer. Although this brand has released four mattresses after it, the original bed remains one of the most sought-after beds seven years after its debut.

Who is the perfect match for this mattress?

  • Lightweight sleepers weighing less than 230 lbs– this mattress’s medium firmness level and sinkage make it ideal for individuals weighing below 230 lbs. Our review team at SleepSharp agrees that individuals with a heavier personality might find the mattress overly soft. This could lead to spine and neck misalignment.
  • Side, back, and stomach combo sleepers– the Casper mattress tends to get a lot of praise from side, stomach, and back sleepers thanks to its excellent conformity and above-average support level.
  • Individuals who sleep hot– the top layer of the Casper mattress is a proprietary foam engineered with breathability in mind. So, unlike regular memory foam that tends to trap heat, this bed sleeps much cooler than most competitor brands.
  • Couples– this mattress’s ability to accommodate combo sleepers make it an ideal pick for couples with different sleeping positions. Also, it has excellent motion isolation capability, which is necessary among light sleepers who are sensitive to nighttime movements from their partners and pets.

Construction: Know why Casper mattress is so special

This mattress’s cover uses 100% polyester for the top panel and a blend of polyester and spandex for the side panels. Polyester is a human-made fabric made from chemical agents and a combination of different types of machinery. This construction makes polyester fibers considerably cheaper than other materials such as cotton while still achieving almost equal durability ratings.

Unlike a decade or so back, manufacturers today use a simple weaving pattern that gives these fabrics above-average breathability..

The side panels have an incredible stretchy feel thanks to the spandex-polyester blend. This construction ensures that the cover fits snugly on the mattress without shifting uncomfortably beneath your body. Again, since this cover is removable for washing, the stretchy feel makes it possible to put it back on the mattress.

Comfort layers

Memory foam is a highly sought-after material today thanks to its pressure-relieving contouring and conformity. On the downside, this material tends to retain heat, which might be uncomfortable for hot sleepers. It’s a poor performer in terms of bounce too.

caspter mattress construction layers - SleepSharp

That’s why Casper has tweaked this material to create a proprietary poly foam that it uses for its first layer of the comfort section. This layer is 1.5 inches thick and has the characteristics of memory foam. However, it stands out in that it has a little bit of bounce that makes moving on the mattress notably easier. Even more, this proprietary foam has a porous structure that allows your body heat to move away from you.

The second layer of the comfort section is a 1.5-inch 4 PCF medium-density memory foam. This layer is what aligns your neck, shoulders, spine, and hips for pressure-relieving properties.

Transition layer

The transition layer in this mattress is what our review team calls the game-changer. Let’s explain. At a glance, this 1.5-inch 2.5 PCF poly foam is just like any other layer on other mattresses. The selling point, however, is that this one is zoned.

One half of this layer, from the hips to the head section, is slightly softer than the half from the hipbone to the toes section. Casper explains that when sleeping on a mattress, it’s the part from your hips to the toes that exerts a lot of pressure on the bed, thereby creating the uncomfortable stuck-in-bed feeling.

By using foams with different firmness levels for these two halves, Casper succeeds in offering the right balance of comfort and support while making it easy to switch between different sleeping positions. .

Base foundation layer

The base of the Casper mattress is a 7.5-inch high-density poly foam that offers the core support for the other layers. Its high-density firmness minimizes the rate of degradation besides ensuring that the bed holds its shape without sagging for a long time.

Mattress Height

This mattress has a height of 12 inches. This tends to be the most preferred thickness for most average weight folks. It also interests individuals who want a mattress that is neither too high nor too low. In our review of Casper mattress, we appreciated that a good amount of this height comes from the core layer. The thickness of the base means that you get a durable bed that offers a good amount of support and comfort without overwhelming you with either of these.

Our Opinion of Casper Mattress Firmness and Feel

Our team of experts rated this mattress five on the 1-10 firmness scale. Although this rating puts it on the medium-firm level, we feel that this mattress is slightly on the soft side. This could explain why in most Casper mattress reviews, current users say that lying on this bed feels like sleeping on the cloud.

Despite its plush feel, the poly foam used for the top layer of this mattress coupled with the zoned transition layer gives it an incredible level of support too.

Overall, we think this mattress will be an excellent pick for individuals weighing less than 230 lbs. Folks weighing more than this may sink through the comfort and transition layer leading to an overly soft feel. This could cause the spine to get out of alignment leading to hip, shoulder, and neck pains.

How does the Casper Mattress Perform in Real Life?

This section offers a more detailed review of how this mattress fairs on different aspects, from temperature retention to durability. Our evaluation of these vital considerations come from responses from current users and reviews from external testers and other mattress experts.

Casper Mattress Performance Rating

Pressure relief4.8/5
Temperature management4.5/5
Motion isolation4.8/5
Edge support4.2/5

Pressure Relief

Pressure relief in mattresses refers to the ability of the bed to release pressure built on the joints. Memory foam is the best performer in this regard thanks to its ability to conform to the sleeper’s body shape. However, this is often a delicate balance between a feeling of the mattress being either as hard as rock or overly soft.

Casper has a simple but very practical approach to this. By placing a 1.5” poly foam layer on top of memory foam, what you get is a bed that contours to your shape without you shooting deep into the mattress.

Again, the zoned transition layer also comes in handy and ensures that you get optimum support right where you need it: on your upper and lower back.

Temperature management

This is another notable strength of this mattress judging from most reviews. The proprietary foam used on the first layer has a structural design that allows body heat to pass through into the subsequent layers for dissipation. The cover material, albeit 100% polyester, has a well-thought weaving design that increases breathability too.

Overall, most people who use this mattress report that it sleeps much cooler than typical memory foam-only mattresses.

Motion isolation

Motion isolation is an important aspect, particularly for couples and folks who share their bed with a pet. Generally, all-foam mattresses are great in absorbing motion and preventing its transfer to the other side of the bed.

However, going by reports from other independent testers and experts, the Casper mattress is a much better performer here. Our review team attributes this above-average performance to the proprietary foam that the sleepers are in direct contact with.

All-foam mattresses are very discreet compared to hybrid and innerspring mattresses. When either of the partners is rolling or turning in bed, the mattress will make virtually no noise. This is why the Casper mattress makes a worthy investment for light and super-sensitive sleepers who lose their sleep with minimal disturbance.

Edge support

A mattress with firm and comfortable edges not only offers a larger sleeping surface area, but it also prevents the risk of rolling off the bed at night. Again, a firm edge support makes it possible to sit comfortably on the bed as you chat over the phone and when tying your shoelaces.

Similar to other mattresses of its type, the Casper mattress has a notable sinkage when you sit on the edge. However, we have to acknowledge that it’s more supportive compared to most average memory foam mattresses. This is probably due to its thick, high-density base.

When buying the best mattress for sex, you want to consider a bed that allows you to move easily over the bed when changing position. A bouncy bed also significantly contributes to your overall experience.

Unfortunately, these two areas are where all-foam mattresses tend to struggle the most. As the mattress conforms to the shape of the couple, it tends to trap them, thereby curbing swift movements. Also, these mattresses lack the springiness of hybrid and innerspring beds.

On the upside, an all-foam mattress makes it easy to retain sex positions for long without causing pressure buildup around joints. Again, the Casper mattress has a notable amount of bounce thanks to its proprietary top comfort layer. This is what gives this mattress the upper hand if you were to compare it with other contenders.

When you pull out any bed-in-a-box from its packaging, you will notice a funky chemical smell that may linger for some hours or days. That will be the case with the Casper mattress. Off-gassing in mattresses is common. It occurs when Volatile Organic Compounds break down and float in the air where you can breathe them.

The good news is that although off-gassing is unpleasant, the smells are not toxic. Again, you can speed up this process by airing the mattress outside for a day or two, washing the cover, and sprinkling baking soda on the bed.

The quality of construction and the materials used for this mattress speak volumes about its longevity. It’s not a wonder that this mattress boasts the highest durability rating on a side-to-side comparison with other all-foam beds. This mattress does not get as many reports of support loss, sagging, and formation of impressions when compared to other contenders.

On average, we expect this mattress to last at least seven years, which is the average durability range for most all-foam mattresses.

Casper has enough confidence that this mattress will hold up nicely for at least 10 years, though. This is not surprising considering the support core on this bed.

How does it feel to sleep on the Casper mattress for sleepers with different weights?

Lightweight sleepers- less than 130 lbs

When previous users report that this mattress feels like sleeping on the cloud, most of them tend to come from this group. Lightweight combo sleepers prefer sleeping on soft- to medium-soft beds since they get a good balance of support, comfort, and spine alignment.

Average-weight sleepers- 130-230 lbs

Most people in this category also have nothing but praises for this mattress. Side sleepers say that it offers satisfying relief, especially because the shoulder region is softer to allow the shoulder joint to sink comfortably into the structure. Even when lying on your back, this mattress sinks gradually to conform nicely to your upper and lower back without causing that stuck-in-the-bed sensation.

Heavyweight sleepers- above 230 lbs

Most sleepers above 230 lbs find this mattress overly soft for their liking. Although some side sleepers who prefer lying on soft surfaces may find it somewhat comfortable, the shoulders and hips start becoming uncomfortable the longer you stay on the bed. Stomach sleepers in this category are going to find this mattress the most uncomfortable. The reason is that the shoulders misalign with the hips, thereby causing tension around the hip region.

Possible Negative Reviews and Complaints

  • The mattress having a horrible smell after unpacking – This is common with most foam mattresses. It results from the breakdown of VOCs and should subside in a few days. However, folks who are super-sensitive to chemical odors may smell it for up to a month or two. This smell isn’t toxic to your health, though.
  • Mattress not expanding to the right size – Again, this does occur in a few bed-in-a-box mattresses. This occurs, especially if the mattress has been folded in the stores for a long time. In case this happens, it’s in your best interest to contact Casper for a replacement.
  • Mattress too hot – Most people who sleep very hot may find this mattress uncomfortable debit to its all-foam layers and polyester cover. However, if you don’t sleep hot, you might find this mattress very cool.
  • Not bouncy – This mattress does not have innerspring support. So, although its proprietary layer has a notable degree of bounce compared to other beds, it’s not as much as you’d get from hybrid and innerspring beds.

Review Verdict

Casper mattress takes a lot of things into consideration when engineering this mattress. This is one among a few other beds that offer the comfort of memory foam minus the feeling of getting stuck in the bed. Its proprietary poly foam layer also gives it a considerable amount of bounce that makes moving across the mattress relatively easier.
