Plushbeds Mattress Review – Botanical Bliss Buy or Pass?

plushbeds review featured - SleepSharp

Organic mattresses can be quite pricey compared to traditional innerspring and memory foam beds. However, if you are sensitive to chemicals or if you generally prefer going green, there’s a lot to go for in these chemical- and pesticide-free beds.

In this mattress review, we are going to talk about a bed that you’ll come across a lot in most discussions of the best natural mattresses; the Botanic Bliss.

This is one of the three natural latex mattresses that Plushbeds offers. It is a 100% organic bed with three natural GOLS certified Dunlop latex layers, organic New Zealand wool, and GOTS certified cotton cover.

The Botanical Bliss material comes in three mattress height options; 9”, 10”, and 12”. After narrowing down to your ideal thickness, you’ll also have an opportunity to choose the right firmness for your sleep needs between medium (5.5) and medium-firm (6.5).

Even better, this is an adjustable mattress that lets you fine-tune its firmness feel by rearranging the layers as you’d like.

As we always do at SleepSharp, this Plushbeds Botanical Bliss Review will explain who we believe is the perfect match for this bed. We’ll also tell you how it performs in aspects, such as temperature neutrality, motion isolation, edge support, and durability, among others.

It currently boasts six high-end luxury beds consisting of three 100% natural mattresses and three memory foam models.

  • Botanical Bliss- has natural latex and organic cotton and wool
  • Luxury Bliss- hybrid innerspring and latex mattress
  • Natural Bliss- a 100% latex wool-free and vegan bed
  • 12” Cool Bliss gel memory foam
  • 9” Ocean Mist gel memory foam
  • 12” Posture Plush medium-firm memory foam

Who do we recommend it for?

  • Eco-friendly individuals who care about what goes into their mattress– a major pro of this mattress is that it boasts some of the world’s most stringent quality standards certifications. Being able to meet GreenGuard Gold, OEKO-TEX, GOLS and GOTS speak volumes about its level of construction standards.
  • Those who are sensitive to chemicals and allergens– unlike the chemical-laden memory and poly foam beds, our mattress review team appreciates that this bed uses natural Dunlop latex and organic cotton and wool. Latex, which comes from rubber trees, is naturally dust mite resistant.
  • Folks who like the pressure-relieving traits of memory foam but dislike the feeling of being stuck in bed– something else that we like in this Plushbeds mattress review is the bounciness of this bed. Like memory foam, it does contour to your body shape. However, it also has a unique springiness that eliminates the stuck-in-mud feel.
  • Hot sleepers– another incredible attribute of natural latex is its excellent air circulation in comparison to other foam beds. This means that you are less likely to sleep hot on it.

Plushbeds Mattress Construction – Know why it’s different

plushbeds layers detailed - SleepSharp

The Plushbeds Botanical Bliss boasts a luxuriously knit cover made from 100% organic cotton. Just below the cotton cover, this mattress also has around ten pounds of 100% natural New Zealand wool in a 1-inch thick layer.

These two materials give this mattress its initial comfortable and supportive feel. Cotton and wool also do a great job of regulating body temperature. When it’s hot, the cotton cover is good at wicking away moisture. On the other hand, wool helps you stay cool when it’s hot and also retains warmth in winter.

Comfort layer

All the three thickness options of the Botanical Bliss mattress consist of 100% natural latex layers. The 9” and 12” beds have two latex layers (2” and 3”) for their comfort zone. The 10” bed also has two latex layers but both of these measure 3”.

Now, the variation in firmness levels between the Medium and Medium-Firm mattresses is as a result of the differences in the actual Indentation Load Deflections (ILD) of the specific layers of latex in each bed.

So that you understand, ILD is a measure of latex firmness. It classifies individual latex layers on a scale of 12 to 50, where 12 is very soft, and 50 is very firm.

For the medium mattress, the top layer of the comfort system has an ILD of 20, while the second layer has a rating of 23.

On the other hand, the first and second layers of the medium-firm mattress have an ILD reading of 25 and 30, respectively.

As these figures above show, the medium-firm mattress is slightly firmer than the medium bed.

Support layer

For the medium setting, the 9” and 10” mattresses have a 3-inch support layer with an ILD rating of around 25. The 12” thick option, however, uses two 3” layers for its support zone one with an ILD of approximately 25 and the other one with a rating of 30.

Switching gear to the medium firm mattress, the 9” and 10” beds have a 3” support layer with an average ILD reading of 35. The 12” thick mattress has two layers of latex for its support. The first has an average ILD of 30 while that of the second layer is about 35.

What is the height of the Plushbeds mattress?

As mentioned earlier in this Plushbeds mattress review, the Botanical Bliss comes in three thickness options; 9”, 10”, and 12”. Generally, our mattress review experts recommend the 9” bed for lightweight individuals weighing 220 lbs and below. Folks between 220 lbs and 275 lbs should do just fine with the 10” bed. For heavier people above 275 lbs, the 12” mattress will meet your sleep needs much better.

After analyzing the reviews, some heavier folks report that the 10-inch mattress still works for them. While this is possible, these individuals are likely to wear out the bed much faster.

How Firm does the Botanical Bliss mattress feel?

The Botanical Bliss mattress comes in two firmness settings: medium, which has a firmness level of 5.5 and medium-firm, which falls at 6.5.

As these ratings indicate, the medium mattress is slightly on the soft side compared to the medium-firm bed. Laying on this model, you’ll find it as plushy as memory foam bed at the same setting would feel. The only difference, however, is that latex has a degree of responsiveness that comes in in the form of support to make you feel like you are floating. So, you won’t be sleeping IN the mattress. Neither will you feel stuck.

The medium-firm mattress also has a little bit of hug and contour. However, compared to the medium model, this one has less give and will, therefore, have less contouring.

Importantly, remember that you can play around with the layers of your mattress to get a personalized firmness level.

Performance Ratings- Plushbeds Botanical Bliss Mattress in Action

In this section of the Plushbeds mattress review, we’ll take a closer look at how this bed performs in various aspects.

Temperature regulation

The Botanical Bliss mattress neither sleeps cool nor hot. We’d say it tends to remain neutral, which is quite commendable. This means that you won’t be overheating or waking up super cold because the mattress is drawing heat from you. The soft organic cotton cover helps in absorbing moisture, while the breathable wool layer and pinholes in the latex layers boost air circulation.

Motion isolation

As it’s the case with most latex mattresses, the Plushbeds Botanical Bliss tends to transfer a notable amount of movement energy across the bed. Well, it’s not as much as innerspring do, but a sensitive sleeper will feel his/her partner getting in and out of bed.

Our mattress review experts praise this mattress a lot on this aspect. This rating is usually consistent with all all-foam mattresses. Since they don’t have any coils that would otherwise scratch and squeak, these beds are very quiet and highly recommendable for sensitive sleepers.

Edge support

As an all-foam mattress, it’s not surprising that the Plushbeds Botanical Bliss mattress has a notable compression when sitting on one spot along the edge. However, when you lie flat on the side, the feeling of rolling off the bed is almost nonexistent with individuals weighing less than 230 lbs. All in all, if you’re a heavyweight couple, we’d advise you to go for the larger sizes to ensure that you have more usable space.

This is another one of the areas that this bed seems to excel in most reviews. Regardless of the firmness level, the Botanical Bliss combines a fairly bouncy feel and incredible responsiveness to create what most people consider as a great mattress for sex. Again, remember that this bed does not retain heat, and it’s discreet, so there’s virtually no limitation on what you can do on it.

Pressure relief

The Botanical Bliss offers quite a good amount of cradling, especially if you are keen to match its firmness level with your weight. However, it does not conform as closely as you’d expect from a memory foam mattress. On the one hand, this means that you might not experience as much pressure relief. On the other hand, latex wins in other areas such as holding your spine, shoulders, and hips in a near-natural alignment for full relaxation. Importantly, since it does not sleep heat, you enjoy a deep sleep without frequent turns. This deep sleep may help a lot in pain relief and muscle regeneration.

plushbeds side sleeper support - SleepSharp

As an all-natural bed, most Plushbeds mattress reviews affirm that this model does not have the irritating chemical smell that most cheap memory foam beds ship with. However, when you set up this mattress, you are going to experience a faint earthy smell, which emanates from the wool. This, however, should disappear in 24 hours in the utmost.

All factors considered, latex mattresses tend to eclipse memory foam beds by a couple of years in terms of durability. Narrowing down to latex itself, Dunlop is dense and, therefore, scores the highest marks compared to Talalay latex. On average, we expect the Botanical Bliss mattress to last at least 10 years, especially if you keep turning the layers. Plushbeds has higher expectations in it as its 25-year warranty proves.

Plushbeds Mattress vs. Your Weight and Sleeping Position

Light sleepers- less than 130 lbs

Lightweight sleepers tend to enjoy the medium setting the most compared to the medium-firm option. This is because, at this weight range, they can push through the comfort layers for a good cradle that is necessary for pressure relief.

On the other hand, they find the medium-firm bed a little bit firmer. This setting may actually cause pressure points around the shoulder blade and hip joint for side sleepers.

Average weight sleepers- 130 lbs to 230 lbs

Back and stomach sleepers who fall in this group tend to enjoy both of these mattresses almost equally. However, side sleepers are going to love the medium bed as it has more give and a deeper cradling that these folks require for adequate pressure relief. On this note, our mattress review team appreciates that side sleepers, who tend to be so picky on the feel of the bed, has an option to tweak the firmness level by rearranging the comfort layers.

Heavyweight sleepers- above 230 lbs

Most heavyweight sleepers are going to appreciate the 12-inch thick mattress with the medium-firm setting. Regardless of the sleeping position, this firmness feel plus thickness offers a good level of cradling plus enough support to prevent sinking too deep into the mattress. In addition, this thickness promises a bed that is going to offer good value in terms of longevity of use.

Regular Complaints about Plushbeds Mattress that we’ve come across

  • Mattress transfers movement – This mattress’s springiness comes at the compromise of motion isolation. So, compared to a memory foam mattress, you’ll hear your partner getting into or leaving the bed if you are a sensitive sleeper.
  • Not as contouring as memory foam – It would help if you kept in mind that natural Dunlop latex is denser and much more responsiveness than memory foam. As such, it tends to have minimal contouring.
  • Weird new mattress smell – Although this mattress is 100% natural, you’ll still get a faint earthy smell, which mostly comes from the wool layer. Expect it to dissipate in 24-48 hours, though.
  • Very pricey – Organic mattresses are generally expensive. A mattress that combines natural Dunlop latex and organic wool and cotton is going to be even more expensive. On the upside, these mattresses have fewer chemicals and are much more durable.

Our Verdict

That’s all for this Plushbeds mattress review! We hope that we answered most, if not all, of your questions regarding the Botanical Bliss. As a recap of the review above, the medium setting tends to favor lightweight to average weight sleepers (130-230 lbs) the most. If you weigh more than this, consider going with the 12-inch thick mattress with the medium-firm feel.
